インディカー・シリーズ第3戦ロングビーチ決勝で4番手からスタートした佐藤琢磨（AJフォイト・レーシング）が見事なレース運びで日本人初の同シリーズ優勝という快挙を成し遂げた。
ウイニングランで何度もガッツポーズした琢磨。表彰台の前に設けられたウィナーズエリアに戻りマシンを降りると日の丸を満面の笑みで日の丸を掲げ、スタンドに詰めかけたファンの声援に応えた。

その後、2001年のF3マカオGP以来、およそ12年ぶりとなる表彰台の頂点に立った琢磨は、笑顔でトロフィーを掲げ、歓喜のシャンパンファイトを演じた。2位のグラハム・レイホールと3位ジャスティン・ウィルソンも今日の主役にシャンパンシャワーを浴びせ祝福した。

この日はスタートから的確に少ないチャンスを生かして順位を上げ、最後は昨年在籍したレイホール・レターマン・ラニガン・レーシングのマシンを駆るグラハム・レイホールを引き離し、圧倒的な強さを見せ付け、誰もが認める主役となった。
